The Power of Agreement By Sarah Stanley

My husband spent his childhood and teen years in India, where Christians are a minority.  Growing up Gideon daily saw evidence of demonic forces at work in his community.  Doorway entrances to Hindu homes often have garlands or drawings put out daily to appease a god.  Temples or small shrines can be seen on almost any street in the villages and cities of India.  Dwelling as a minority in a culture where idol worship and witchcraft is actively practiced, Christian leaders from various denominations and traditions often join forces to conduct city-wide crusades or prayer meetings, because they are all acutely aware of the common evil forces which confront and challenge their advance of the gospel.

For years my husband and I have encouraged the student prayer movement, and our key scripture Matthew 18:19 refers to the “power of agreement.”

19 “Again[d] I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”

Strategic, corporate prayer is key to obtaining victory over your enemy.  Recently, a young woman accomplished in the field of pharmaceutics called our church number.  Although she has done very well professionally, one area of ongoing struggle was her search for a life partner.  Almost ten years had passed since she attended our prayer meetings as a student.  Yet in her moment of need; she reached out to us for advice and counsel.  My husband Gideon had recently planned a time of fasting prayer; inviting other young singles to pray for one another and invited this young woman to join.

I share this story, because this young woman was not afraid to reach out and call for backup in her area of battle!   After connecting with this group, this young woman spoke with one of the ladies and shared about a man who was pursuing her through an online group.  As the two women conversed about this; they realized that the same man had pursued both of them and this young woman learned he did not have pure intentions.  The enemy was exposed immediately!

In this young woman’s victory over the enemy’s plans; the corporate, fasting prayer was key!  She could have resisted the invitation to join a prayer group, or hesitated to call us.  But as she joined forces with us and the other young women; she immediately escaped the enemy’s trap! I believe as she continues to ‘battle’ with her new ‘troop,’ God will bring her into the place of possessing her promise!

As you seek strategies for your breakthrough, be sure to enlist fellow soldiers who can come in agreement with you and God’s word.  As you join your prayers together, as a united force, you will be able to weaken the enemy’s hold on the territory that God has promised for you!

Never Give Up

Once you have engaged the enemy, be prepared to stay in the fight!  Remember that this is no ordinary prayer for daily bread, or casual petition for a blessing.  As you seek your breakthrough, you are preparing to take enemy ground and penetrate his defenses.  “Increasingly intense fighting always precedes strategic breakthroughs”  (Praying for a Breakthrough, Jon Bloom, Desiring God, 10/5/2015).  Don’t succumb to discouragement, weariness, or retreat under increased attacks.  Stay in the fight, as Ephesians 6:10 says “ 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”
